How-To: Find your Windows XP Product Key on the Windows XP CD

I have only tried it on a XP Professional CD, but it should work for the Home and OEM versions of Windows XP from restore disks.

How-To: Find Windows XP Product Key from the Windows XP CD:

1) Insert Windows XP cd into a working computer.
2) Exit the Autorun introduction.
3) Open “My Computer”
4) Right Click on the Windows XP cd-rom drive and select explore.
5) Open the USWXP32P_ZX folder. (It may be as a hidden folder. If you cannot locate the folder, you may also search for unattend.txt and mark “Search Hidden Files”.)
6) Open the sysprep folder.
7) Open unattend.txt

Your CD’s product key is contained within the unattend.txt file.

I have a WinXP Pro SP1 disc and lost the key. I tried this and it did not work. I also looked at a disc with SP2 and the key in that file did not match the one I used to install it. Any other way?

  9. Rog on

Same problem here – the key on the CD doesn’t match and the contents in UNATTEND.TXT indicates that the key given is only there as an example.

OK, so i found the product # in the unattend.txt folder… however, it says it is not valid and tells me that my computer can not be upgraded from windows 98 to windows XP.. is this true??? Any help please!!?

  25. Mike B on

Good show! It wasn’t in the exact folder for mine. But I did learn that the product key is in there. I managed to find it and I’m glad. Thanks.

  26. Anonymous on

The product key isn’t in the cd!

    Use your brains

the cd that installs the system is mass produced for millions of installations ALL USING UNIQUE KEYS for each installation.

The one there is for the default initialisations.

  27. Anonymous on

The product key in the unattend.txt is invalid.

  28. Anonymous on

you talk shit mate, each copy of the opersting system have its UNIQUE KEYS.

You can call customer service from the Windows Activation Window and tell them that you reloaded your OS and need to activate it. You’ll get someone from India most likely and they’ll just read you this really long Product Id to put in. Ive done it aleast 3 times already. So use whatever you need to get the installaton going and then call if it wont activate it. Simple.

  44. illegalalien on

Oh and if you want here is a utility that you can download that will tell you what Product key your computer was really installed with. Its at easydesksoftware.com called the CD reader. Might help, might not. worth a try though.

  45. ahmed on

yes.. its there alrite.. thanks dude.. your a genius

Lol, yeah, all the product keys which show up through this method are the same.
The one that showed up for me did not work,
    but XP8BF-F8HPF-PY6BX-K24PJ-TWT6M ended up
working. (It is still installing, I’m not sure
if I’ll need another key later).
    Well, thanks anyway.=]

  49. kangasaurus on

DUDE! The XP8BF code worked beautifully! I’d been trying forever to find one (I have a cloned CD that was from my old school, and it was theoretically unattended, but apparently not this time). The unattend.txt thing is crap, but the keys work! To get the other key (the authentication key, after you’ve installed windows), just call the number it gives you and say you lost the documentation or something. They give you a new one right away! LOL. Props man.

  50. Anonymous on

Let’s start this response by stating there are more answers to this puzzle than meet the naked eye so we’ll cover just a few things that you can do.

    1. If you’re OS is at least in tact and accessible find and write down the “Product ID” (not the Product Key obviously because that’s what you are trying to find) by looking on the “General” tab of the “System Properties” and do a search for Product ID converters and use one of the freeware utilities to convert your Product ID back to the original Product Key and if you have the original CD at this point you whack the box and reload with the product key.

    2. If you have the original CD, open the \i386 folder and first off search for 3 distinct files (winnt.sif, unattend.txt, and setupp.ini). To see them all you will have to have hidden files and folders and hide extensions for known file types unchecked in folder options and if you don’t know how do this then you don’t need to be trying this anyway. If you have all 3 files, chances are you have an OEM version of the software. You can verify this by opening the setupp.ini file with notepad and look at the “PID=” and you should see a value similar to this “PID=55277OEM”, which indicates the CD is a Windows XP Home Edition and it’s an OEM version. The last 3 characters of the value indicate whether or not it’s OEM, Retail, Upgrade or Volume licensing. You can search more on versioning on your own. At any rate, This is good for you because your search is done. Now, open up the “winnt.sif” file with notepad and look for the “Product Key=”. This key is your product key and NOT the one in the unattend.txt file. Okay, once you have the key from the winnt.sif file whack the box and install the OS using the key from the winnt.sif then connect to the internet and activate your product.

    3. Last tidbit. The masses are correct in the fact that the unattend.txt file contains a key however that key is simply used for a 30-day trial and/or activation period. You should be able to use that key if you do not have a winnt.sif file however keep in mind that key will only buy you enough time to get the system operational. You will still have to get a valid key prior to trial/activation end or the system will halt on you and you’ll be right back at square one. The second piece of this is you will be limited to what Microsoft updates will download and install based on service pack number for the original installation.

FINAL NOTE: The information provided is strictly for educational and recovery use only and not intended for use in any hacking, cracking, reverse engineering, or other activity that is illegal in nature. If you legitimately own an original CD and have truly lost the key or then this information is for you. On the other hand, if you have a legitimate key and don’t have your original OS CD/DVD then that’s another story and maybe we’ll get into that the next time.

It is true that these product keys are for a trial version, and you still have to Activate Windows after you install. But all you have to do is use the phone number instead of using the Internet. Very simple, a little longer, but it works. You give them the numbers it shows on your screen, and then they give you numbers in return. Good luck! Worked great for me!

ok hey everyone just to give you a hint theres a reason ea disc has its own validation key handing out your validation key on here will cause problems for you later cause microsoft will disable your windows because so many other people are using it ea validation key is only registered to 1 computer so if its on 8 computers they will kill that validation key meaing all computers with it will be dead it is advisable to not hand out the key that works for you or youll be looking for a new one eventually oh and even though the unattend hasnt worked for everyone it obviously has worked for others so its worth a shot if your in need and here you are so in need indeed :) oh and the product key in my unattend hasnt been listed on this page so for all those saying they are all the same no they arent maybe you just have a old win xp disc like before they started monitering the widows validation keys like hawks with binoculars mine starts out with r6r not xpcdt as many others are showing

Anything else I could try? My hard drive is reformatted and the product key that came with the cd doesn’t work.

And why are XP Pro CDs still selling on ebay for $70+??

  170. Dmanz on

For all of those that are having problems:
The numbers listed in the unattend.txt are ONLY the number that the OEM manufacturer uses to do an unattended installation on hundreds/thousands of computers per day!
Can you imagine some poor tech typing individual product keys all day long????

It will ONLY let you get the installation started and at some point, WILL ASK YOU FOR A VALID COA KEY NUNMBER.
Each OEM has several numbers they use in bulk that ALSO have the COA stickers tied to the UNATTEND.TXT numbers.
The unattend.txt numbers ONLY LET YOU install unattended as a courtesy of the OEM (lol!) when you need to re-install the OS as it was when it was shipped.

Also, many OEMs use a SLP (slip installation file) in which the OEM (Dell, HP, Toshiba, E-Machines, Gateway etc.) ties thier installations to THIER BIOS! This means that it WILL NOT ACTIVATE if you try to install on any other computer. It MAY install on any other computer that is BY THE SAME OEM, due to the BIOS being the same that is on the mainboard, but you will probably not have the correct drivers for your particular computer so you will have to update all the drivers that show in device manager with yellow question marks. At the very least you will have to find correct drivers for, in order: Chipset, LAN, Video, Sound, Modem, USB.

Microshafts WPA, WGA tools that get installed automatically when you use auto update, (auto shaft me!) checks several files on your computer to see if you are in compliance with the license agreement you said yes to. This gets checked EVERY time you boot. If you are not using a genuine MS OS (bootlegged copy or VLK that has been blocked) you may one day months from now, find a little Microsoft Genuine Advantage pop-up and a black desktop appear. This will tell you that your OS is not genuine and you have 30 days to correct the problem (buy an OS from them). After 30 days uncorrected, your SOL, no more boot! This also applies to any MS Office program that doesn’t cut the mustard.

There us another tool that MS likes you to download and install called “MGDiag”. This tool will check several files on your computer to find out if you are genuine or not. It is a very useful tool that will tell you many things that MS looks at while spying on you. USE THIS TOOL FOR INFO, but if you know that you are not legit, DON”T SEND THEM THE INFO because you may not want to snitch (report piracy) to MS. You can DL the tool from MS, check the WGA forum on the MS website.

this is bullshit i dont even see the sense

  186. Steven on

The procedures here only discuss how to look at the automated unattend.txt file product key that is not the one that came on your system or disk that you have lost. The other procedure mentioned about the winnt.sif file is only showing the current product key on the system you are using to view the file, not the one that came on your system or cd case and there are a number of other freeware programs out there that will do that in a second. I am sure that the product key that is placed on the system or cd case is on the cd somewhere and encrypted. If it were not, the install process would not continue on some versions. Some cd’s just install the operating system for 30 days and then require activation. This enables MS to verify that the key is valid. I believe that OEM disks do not have the key that was on your system on them, because they allow you to install the system first and then have you activate it with the valid product key that is on the system or cd case. I believe that retail cd’s have the key encrypted on them somewhere, but not in a winnt.sif file. The procedures defined here work for some, because they are using valid previously used product keys. however, it is not working for others, because the keys they are using are not. As for the last post that states this is bullshit and they don’t see the sense, people want to retrieve the valid cd key they paid for when they purchased thier systems and not have to pay more for the one that was rubbed off over time, pealed of by a child, or what ever other reason their key is gone. If I do find a way of getting the key from the cd, I will post it here.

  187. Steven on

My final note would be, if you have a OEM disc and want to get the key for it and your system is still working, use one of the programs out there as freeware to get it off the system. If not, call Microsoft and bug them several times to get a new one for the one you had. For a reatil disc,it is most likely there encrypted on the disc and good luck finding it. You might try bugging Microsoft for one too.

I have a Dell installation CD for Windows XP Pro SP2 (no documentation just the cd) and not one time during installation did it ask me for a product key. Now that I have installed it wants to be activated, but it won’t work. I have tried to activate over the internet and it asks me for a code and I have tried to enter the product key from the WINNT.SIF file and it say’s that it’s invalid. I have tried the activation over the phone and after going thru that neverending set of numbers in the box with the automated system it tells me that something’s wrong with my Product key and that I should find the key in my book or whatever it is that I do not have and vewrify that it is correct. If I click on the Change Product Key box it shows me that the key is the exact same as the one in the .SIF file … so why will this stupid thing not activate for me????

    Thanks for you great help

  212. asrar on

Guys you can follow annonomouys direction to find the Sp3 key from you CD.
It really works 100% trust me

Word to the wise, this new trojan looks EXACTLY LIKE a Windows update System Pack 3 update! I thought it was, and it got me. Also, I suspect that it was tied to two sites that I visited, so I am notifying the webmasters as we speak.

Ussually if you are unable to locate it. Just search within the main directory of the cd and specify only .txt along with search hidden files and folders and subfolders. It will display.

Do not change the numbers unless you know what your doing. Thats not the reg key, thats only a txt document with numbers that was manually input by microsoft team (Lots of labor there for such a huge salary”), but anyways.. I’ve seen a few people made that mistake around my area.

  261. x3ph on

And for Mr.RU Kidding me, what are you talking about. We are talking about the disk.

WIN XP Professional would already have SP 1,2,3 so the product key within that unattend would be accurate or microsoft would be in alot of trouble.

WIN XP SP3 Same shit like WIN XP PRO

None of these worked for me; my disk does not have the .sif file at all, not even when searching for hidden files. The laptop was full of junk and I want to trade it in or sell it, so I had to reformat HD and reload XP Home. I am stumped at the Product Key, having lost the certificate with the code. All I get from Compaq is form e-mails generated by a computer with an Indian accent (yes, when I read it to myself I can just hear it) that do not address the problem and tell me everything else BUT what I need to know. Microsoft says it’s Compaq’s problem, and Compaq s***s. HELP!

Eh none worked for me. Thats what I get for trying to use the clients OEM professional cd. I guess Ill just have to use a fudged home cd. How lame is that?

So I got bored and called tech support just to see if theyd give me another key. I gave them my product id, and after a few minutes of drumming my fingers the lady told me they no longer support such obsolete product. I asked her where I could get a key for it, as there is no reason to buy vista to upgrade a computer built in 98, and she said to google it.

    HAHAHA :)

  296. anonymous on

    google “magic jelly bean keyfinder”
worked great for my legitimate copy of xp that I had unfortunately lost the key to. btw the key that the keyfinder gave me is NOT the same as what’s listed in the unattended.txt file.

This ones easy, just get rid of windows altogether and install ubuntu/ linuxmint or any other gui based linux distro! no need for shitty product keys or activation hassles, and they do everything windows does anyway

The best tip I have ever got!

  301. nic on

My original XP Recovery CD was stolen and all I have is the copy I burned J.I.C.
I tried the unattend.txt and it gave me code #:

    RH6M6-7PPK4-YR86H-YFFFX-PW8M8

This code did not work. It said “Invalid ID”

So I then found this site and used all codes shown,
    fingers crossed w/ code # :

    XP8BF-F8HPF-PY6BX-K24PJ-TWT6M

but, I had no luck as so many other did… It did not work for me, again I received “Invalid ID”

If anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated, I feel so stuck and cannot figure out what to do… I am honestly debating on taking this matter to small claims court to get my CD back, but honestly, I don’t even know if that will work!
    Please help!

  302. Roxanne on

Ok, you all, let’s say that you got the code to work and the 30 days comes up for activation what then? Also, What about the auto updates? when the info on your computer is checked by ms. You all have the same code, what then?
