How-To: Get Rid of Email Notifications on the Windows Logon Screen

I decided to post this because I usually use MSN at work and it’s not allowed. After using MSN the first time, Windows stores your email address and it shows up on the log on screen every time you go to log on or off the user. SO if you don’t want your boss to see that your chatting during work time, or you just find the email notification annoying there are two ways to get rid of it. One is by changing the registry key that affects the Unread Mail, and the other is by using TweakUI from Microsoft. Both are easy except with TweakUI you have to install a program and then uninstall it if you are at work.

The Registry Way:

1. Click on START > RUN

2. Type “regedit” (without the quotes), that is the Registry Editor

3.  Navigate through:

4. Once you reached the UnreadMail from the Drop-Down Menu select the email account you want to get rid off

5. Right Click on the Account Folder (,

6. Select Permissions

7. Check off Deny on Full Controls and click OK, your done.

 TweakUI Way:

  1. Click here to download TweakUI from Microsoft. (you will find it on the right side bar a little bit down as you scroll)
  2. Once you save it and install it, open it up.
  3. Click on Log-on and the Drop-Down Menu will show you UnreadMail
  4. Check off “Show unread mail on Welcome Screen” (now there will not be a check mark there).
  5. Click OK and you are done.
